Charity Battle 2020 FAQ

What is the Charity Battle?

Every year, the Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends community divides up into gangs based on their favorite group of organisms, then the gangs compete by making memes and donating to conservation causes. The gang that raises the most money wins!

This year’s fundraiser will take place in three rounds. Round One will raise the money needed to give Ashton Biological Preserve a low-interest loan to convert their facility to solar power. Round Two will raise the operating funds needed by the Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon (ASA) to continue their work this year. Round Three is the stretch goal round--if we can raise an additional fifteen thousand dollars for the ASA, they will be able to implement a promising pilot program, in addition to their current projects. What is the history of the Charity Battle?

Soon after starting Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends we realized that a group with such a high concentration of nature enthusiasts had the potential to do a lot of good for the world. We started the Charity Battle Fundraiser to help channel some of this potential while staying true to the group’s meme-centric nature.

We partnered with Ashton Biological Preserve, a land and tortoise conservation group in central Florida, and in 2018 our Facebook group of about 10,000 people raised nearly $2,000, a significant sum for a small nonprofit!

Wild Green Memes itself grew dramatically over the next year, and we decided to make the battle an annual event.

In 2019, with a little over 100,000 members, Wild Green Memes raised a total of $12,500, a large portion of Ashton’s budget and enough, as it turned out, to give the preserve some security as COVID began impacting conservation funding across the world.

This year, with the extra agency that a nonprofit gives us, we’ll be supporting two conservation partner organizations in the charity battle, and have the ability to distribute the funding in a more sophisticated way.

When is the 2020 Charity Battle?

The 2020 Charity Battle will start on Giving Tuesday (December 1st) and end two weeks later, at 11:59 PM EST December 15th.

Are donations made as part of the 2020 Charity Battle tax deductible?

Yes! Donations made to Wild Green Future as part of the annual Charity Battle are tax deductible.

Where does money from the Charity Battle go?

We have prioritized funding for our partner organizations over our own programs this year because of the difficulties many groups are facing due to COVID-19.

A portion of the funds raised will go to buying and shipping stickers and thank you letters for donors. The rest of the money from stages 1, 2, and the stretch goal goes to this year’s partner organizations. If both stages and the stretch goal are met, further donations will go to operations and initiatives by Wild Green Future. The board is paid for their fundraising work in the 2020 Charity Battle through other Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends projects (not through Wild Green Future).

Does the fundraiser support different organizations every year?

Yes and no. Once we begin working with an organization we plan to continue over time, allowing us to have a more sustained impact. As our donations increase, we are expanding our network of partners. Read about this year’s partner organizations here!

Are the organizations competing for funds?

The organizations are not competing for funds. Because the completion of a round is necessary to the start of the next, each donation in Round One brings us closer to the completion of Round Two, etc. We chose to place Ashton Biological Preserve’s loan in Round One because, as the loan is repaid, we will be able to reuse those funds in the form of additional loans and grants, like the one we are giving to the Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon.

How do I join a gang?

You can join a charity battle gang by donating to the fundraiser through its specific donation portal, which earns you a sticker, adds to the gang’s total and moves its symbol forward on the racetrack. If you aren’t in a place to donate, you can still contribute by making memes in support of your chosen gang or gangs.

How are gangs chosen?

The first 4 gangs will be chosen by a poll in the Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends Facebook group which will last from Friday, November 27th to Sunday, November 29th. The gangs which come in 5th and 6th place will go into a Sudden Death Overtime poll on the Wild Green Future Instagram, the winner of which will join the other 4 starting gangs to make the first 5! Further gangs will be added throughout the battle by Wild Green Memes members who donate at least the minimum amount to the Create A Gang option (available when battle launches).

What’s the deal with stickers?

Stickers are a fun reward for donating! We send out a single 2”x2” sticker in the mail for each donation of $5 or more.

What if I want more than one sticker?

It’s only possible to get one sticker per donation, but multiple stickers for one or more gangs can be obtained by donating multiple times.

What if I don't want a sticker?

If you would like to donate but don’t want a sticker, just check the “Opt Out of Sticker” box on the Charity Battle donation portal (which will be available when the Charity Battle begins).

When can I expect my sticker to arrive?
The first 50 donors in the Charity Battle will be sent a Wild Green Future/Charity Battle 2020 sticker within a week of donating. All gang stickers will be sent in the months following the Charity Battle's conclusion.
